Richard Birchall is one of the UK’s most versatile musicians with a growing reputation, both as a performing cellist and as a composer and arranger.
Beginning his musical journey as a chorister at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, Richard went on to win a scholarship at Winchester College before reading Music at Cambridge University and finally studying as a postgraduate cellist at the Guildhall School of Music.
Richard is a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra and has appeared as guest Principal Cello with the Northern Sinfonia and Irish Chamber Orchestra. He also works regularly with the English Chamber Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra and others; and has formed his own group of eight cellists who perform under the title of Cellophony. Under Richard’s direction, this talented group of musicians are already creating a name for themselves in the world of classical music, making their Wigmore Hall debut in December 2011.
